On 22 December 1949, groups of multi-ethnic women began assembling in Grand Bassam taxi station. The women wisely donned French colours and carried small French flags, fooling law enforcement into thinking they’d be marching in favour of the colonial government.7 However, suspicion arose by the time around six busloads of women left for Grand Bassam. As a result, police started banning taxis carrying more than three women. Eventually, police forces cracked down, banning taxis from transporting women entirely. Despite this initial setback, the Ivorian women remained determined. The journey from Abidjan (the capital city) to Grand Bassam was forty-eight kilometres. The women set off by foot, singing Adjanou songs and armed with pestles and sticks. These songs are a tradition from pre-colonial practices used during times of war. Women would gather outside the presence of men and dance the Adjanou and the Monome whilst naked, their bodies covered in kaolin, a soft white clay.8 These women walked through coconut groves and the beach in the direction of Grand Bassam prison. More groups attempted to join the main march, but police forcibly turned them away. Fourteen arrests took place.
